WORK LIFE BALANCING

Work life balance is a way which helps employees of a work place to balance their personal and professional lives. It helps to encourage employees to prioritize their time by giving more time to what’s is more important and maintain a balance by between the personal & career life. It is an important concept in the world of business as it helps to motivate the employees and increases their loyalty towards the company. Having a work-life balance is an important factor of a healthy and a strong work environment. By maintaining a good work-life balance any employee can achieve a stress free life and less issues at the work place as well.  One of the most common health issues in the workplace is chronic stress.  It can lead to physical consequences such as hypertension, digestive troubles, chronic aches and pains and heart problems. It also has a negative impact on mental health because it’s directly linked to a higher risk of depression which is dangerous. (Kohll, 2018)
Work/life balance is an important factor of a successful company because it’s linked to a healthy staff which is one of the main reasons for a well performing company. However some people live to work, and some people work to live and people are rather influenced by their cultural, company, and family standard/backgrounds. Any company has an ethical obligation to promote work/life balance as it serves the company with retention (low employee turnover), productivity and motivation. (Heggertveit-Aoudia, 2018)
A work-life balance which is not up to standard can have negative effects on employee performance, retention and satisfaction. According to research, two of the main indicators of work-life balance have been the flexibility of work plan and the number of working hours. Usually long working hours has a major negative effect on the safety of employees, and will raise stress levels and impair personal health causing adverse effects on employee’s lives.
In order to achieve a balance in work and personal life of an employee, work-life balance policies could be used by organizations. Flexible working hours, part time, working time policy and maternity leave are some examples of these work-life balance policies. However, the implementation of these policies will not be enough for them to successfully ‘work’ as they wish. The workplace culture, which reflects the values and norms of the entire organization is also essential for them to ‘work’. It should also be taken into note to raise adequate awareness of these policies and educate the managers about the significance of the policies and how to implement them is very important. (Joanne White MSc, 2003)
